Don’t judge this book by its cover because its cover doesn’t do the justice!

Hello Buku Jalanan Titi and the crew,

Below is my review for the first challenge:

Dance of Death, 500++ pages written by American authors, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is the sixth book of Pendergast series. I am not so sure whether previous books lead to this book and this leads to subsequent books but I’m getting the whole story just fine. This book is about the FBI special agent, Aloysius Pendergast and his partner, Lieutenant Vincent D’Agosta. When Pendergast was buried alive behind a brick wall in Castel Frosco, his alienated brother, Diogenes rescued him and nursed him back to health. Then who is the villain? Mind you, the antagonist is the protagonist’s brother (interesting right?). Diogenes needed his brother alive to carry out his wicked schemes. Gradually, Diogenes killed people who are close to Aloysius (this includes D’Agosta). Pendergast and D’Agosta was beating time to locate Diogenes whereabouts while tried to identify and (if possible, rescue) the next victim even as the dead body count rises. Okay that’s enough. I’m not going to give away everything. Haha

It was my best friend, Atikah Afifah who suggested me this book. She usually picks up Young Adult books but now she claimed she loves detective/thriller genre. She just happened to find this book at one of Big Bad Wolf sales just for RM8. Also, you can find it at Popular as they are not that scarce but probably not all series. She said this is totally a gem after she read it and it was so much worth the price. She tells me that I’m going to fall in love with the authors, the storyline and the characters.

Well, I cannot fall in love when I haven’t met the authors? (obviously choosing looks!) but I do love their work. Looking at the Goodreads rating, I had a good feeling that this book is not going to disappoint me and it’s not. Similarly to my friend, I love this genre as well so I enjoy the serial-killer-oriented adventure.

Technically, my friend is into fast storyline and I am too. The elements of suspense really keep me turning pages because I want to know what will happen next. But you will not expect what will happen next. The story made me drenched in sweat (metaphorically). Sometimes I cursed at the antagonist for being so baddie without knowing the reasons why and sometimes I slapped my forehead many times asking why this is happening and sometimes I prayed that this should not be happening.

Honestly, I think this could be like Sherlock Holmes in US version. However, I do not adore Aloysius Pendergast as much as Sherlock Holmes because he lacks the detective wits and brilliance to outsmart his foe. Hence the little success he had in stopping those murders when Diogenes is smarter than him. But these characters shouldn’t have to be the same like any other novel right? Anyway, the authors know how to get the story engaging so thumbs up!

All in all, I think it’s a fun read. Don’t miss the fun. I recommend it!

Assalamualaikum and hi!

Hi!

I’m better known as tz and for the first challenge of ’32 books for 2017’ that is your bestfriend favourite book. The book suggested by Hannis Fithrisha is Looking for Alaska by John Green. Shout out to her for picking something that I can manage to decode and thus writing this review about.

This book, Looking for Alaska by John Green is the first published of his long before The Fault in our Stars in 2005 with 223 pages. It had won awards in 2006 and received its proper recognition when TFIOS became famous and landed a spot in the ‘in cinema’ line. John Green is Ed Sheeran type in writing his book. The language used is not that high and is very romantic and poetic and everything that a non native speaker of English could ever hoped for.

This book revolve around two last words by famous people that the main character, Miles Halter, weirdly into.

The first one, quoting François Rabelais's last words: "I go to seek a Great Perhaps."
It is about how an average boy (Miles Halter) is seeking a way out or in the book says ‘The Great Perhaps’ from his mundane life. He goes to boarding that was his father’s former school in the hopes of finding friends and to create memories that he will tell his children and grandchildren when the time comes. Along the way, his path intersects with a girl (Alaska Young) that may have the potential to help him seek The Great Perhaps. The flaw here is that Miles got too attached to a girl that he thought was his soulmate until he became too emotionally dependant on that girl to change his life and make it more meaningful without realising his obsession towards her is unhealthy.  The ‘Great Perhaps’ is mention throughout the book with the meaning of possibilities of certain action leads to. He wanted to change his life, he did it. He doesn’t just sit around for his life to  change.

Second one, quoting Simón Bolívar's: "Damn it. How will I ever get out of this labyrinth!". Which Alaska Young had Miles decode this for her. Miles undoubtedly tries to understand this particular last word for her. And suddenly, he received the news the Alaska had been killed in an accident while leaving campus. He and a few other of his mutual friends with Alaska tries to solve the sudden death of their beloved friend, whether she took a short cut out of the labyrinth. Labyrinth is this point of view is the human suffering and how we choose to face it It’s either you try to endure it or you just bail from it. Sometimes, people just get  lost while going through this labyrinth and just leave it all to fate to solve their problems for them without realizing it doesn’t work that way.

There are a few faith triggering question throughout the book because the author sometimes like to touch on faith and religion and trying to help the readers see world or problems at hand from different perspective. For instance, what is there after death? Do heaven and hell exists? Or just a creation on mind to soothes the living. From my point of view, I do believe in heaven and hell and existence of God and all the five pillars of Islam but to some, they view this faith as fiction. The author touches on Buddhist and Christians believes as well as Islam.

This book has taken me on a wonderful journey through life questioning questions that just triggers you, heart and mind. I cried reading the death of Alaska Young because I’ve fallen I love with her character and I can not blame Miles for obsessing over her. She is my alter ego and the person I’m trying to be minus the indecency. The kind that just  carpe diem, enjoying  life and just there when anybody needs her. But alas, I am merely tz and I will achieve great things just by being myself. And that my friends, is the start of self love that can take you anywhere you could ever dream of.

4.4/5

Lots of love, tz

For the first task we have been given, it was to pick your bestfriend’s book. Madhiah Ghazali, stated she had a few favourite books. It had been easy for her to state the ‘Reclaim your Heart’ book last January. Interestingly, this book was made to be in her syllabus conducted in  her weekly usrah. Marvellous reminder, indeed. She told me that the author made the tiny little things that we take for granted looks really valuable, so priceless. If most of the self help books were glued with full of theories, the author took them into practical, she showed the way.

First thing first, I should be grateful to have a nice book to read, to be selected by her which I could enjoy it myself, through the reading journey. It is a self help book, but not a book that you can lightly just flip it on. It was proven by its relevancy and many people read it globally and internationally although it was published years ago, in 2011. You could see how they excitedly react towards this book through the book reviews website, such as Goodreads.

The book is segmented with various parts. They are Attachments, Love, Hardships, Relationship with Creator, Women’s status, Ummah and Poetry. The author explained these very differently.

The world today was full of attachment and is very fragile. Been made more fragile with the illusion of social media, medias and all those shown on screen. People tend to trust everything edited to be true and feel something lacking in them. They try to achieve the false outer acknowledgement, forgetting the ultimate inner goals of Allah.

Attachment parts, the author discussed how hearts were so attached with the worldly life, with the individuals existed in our life, with our beloved belongings, careers and so much more. We seemed to depend on all stuff. We worshiped things and objects. We became consumed by them, believing that they indicated the life status, gave us happiness and make us whole. Because of His Love, Allah tested us like how the parents take the video game who’s a kid has been hypnotized with, just to make him realized that the video game was just a virtual world. He had a real world. The video game had consumed him, harmful if he let it be, beneficial if he could manage it. The dunya was just similar. We had our real world soon, the hereafter. People came and go. So did the things and stuff. Nothing was eternal.

In the Love section, she explained more on marriage tales and how marriage could be treated rightly. The gift from Allah, meant to be the life partner and the marriage itself, should be brings us closer to God, not the other way round. A union of both partners should be made to seek God much easier because half of our Deen has been completed. Marriage is the means, God is the ultimate Goals. God is the priority in our Heart, not our life partner, they are just means for us to bring us closer to Allah. They should be held in the hands, not heart because the heart is the only place for Allah. If we allowed the ocean of dunya, including our life partner into the heart, yes, we would be drowned, our hearts and life might be shackled. We would be enslaved. Furthermore, she elaborated on the pure and true love and pleasure, comparing the false love, felt by the unmarried coupled which was wrongly advertised by the medias. All in all, love by the human and individuals, all are Allah’s gift and the reflection of His Love and beauty. She pinpointed us to fall in love with the Real Love, The Eternal.

Hardships section reminded us the love of Allah through all the tests. The tests were all of His calling’s sign in leading us to make the U-turn. It was all because of His love. The author likes the analogy of being alone in the ocean and having no one to turn to, except Allah because the moment was very powerful. Indeed, we really did not have any assistance in this world, no one could help us, except Allah. In daily life, Allah shuts the entire door, to make us directed the only way to the Divide Help. Similar situations when we felt the pain and loss, disappointment which did hurts us might lead us to the path of God. “The perceived misfortunes are in fact wake up calls” that we rarely see and realized for the moment.

The Relationship with Creator part was my second favourite part after the Attachment section. In this part, the solat topic was discussed so beautifully. The solat we took for granted, she made me appreciated and embraced the solat moments. It was a slap to a statement that solat would be the first thing we would be questioned on the hereafter day but did our lives reflect the priority? During the Isra’ Mikraj, the Prophet was initially given the commandment to pray for 50 times daily, in showing that how important the prayers should hold our life. Imagine praying for fifty times in 24 hours. How many prayer would you perform in one hour? We would not do anything except praying, portraying how our life should revolves around solat. Yes, Allah had made it easier, five time prayers with the reward of fifty but I grieved of how our people take solat so lightly today. Besides, sacred conversation with Allah which was tahajjud and the hidden danger of Facebook and other social medias also being elaborated. Social medias strengthen our focus on people, our loves to be seen and the illusion of the world. They are also powerful tools for the goodness but just be aware that we are not being enslaved by the social medias, sacrificing our freedom.

The Women’s status, Ummah and Poetry did discuss how women had their own respected status although the women’s job were different with the men while Ummah part mentioned the global issues on Muslims. You would love the poetry section also because personally I am fond of them by the message of love to Allah as well as to the Real World, the hereafter.

Last but not least, please be aware in watching and guiding our heart. Do not let the world break us by filling the heart with the right priority, Allah.

Author : Mitch Albom
Publisher : Sphere
Pages : 500

The first challenge for the “32 Books Challenge” was to read your best friend’s favourite book. The book recommended by my best friend, Jeremy, was ‘The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto’. He had recommended me this book as he knew that I was a staunch lover of Mitch Albom’s works.

The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto tells an epic story of Frankie Presto, one of the world’s greatest guitar players and how he changed six lives with his six magical strings. Frankie, born in a church amidst the Spanish civil war, was left to drown as an infant. Miraculously, he survived and was raised by a blind music teacher until once again, war tore his life apart.

To save his life, his music teacher sent him away to America with an old guitar and six magical strings. His musical journey takes him around the world to perform and Frankie’s presence impacts many other artists including the likes of Elvis Presley, Tony Bennett and the Beatles. Frankie discovers his strings have the ability to alter people’s lives at life or death moments.

Albom never fails to deliver again with his remarkable new book told in the voice of Music. Music is witty, funny and at times preachy. Narrated by Music’s engaging tone, it added extra depth to this already beautiful novel. I really enjoyed journeying with Frankie through his happy moments and sad times. I found myself smiling when things went well for Frankie and cried when the depths of despair consumed him.

The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto is a great read for everyone regardless of whether you are a musician or not. If you are a musician, you will highly appreciate the musicality of this book. And if you are not, maybe, just maybe, this book will lead to you start your own love story with Music and appreciate Music even more.

Heartrending and emotionally touching, Albom throws in a perfect mixture of magic and music in this exceptional book. For a 500-page book, the story never gets too draggy and moves at an allegro – quick – pace, drawing readers in and tugging at their heartstrings. The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto carries the message that “everyone joins a band in this life” and that what we do always affects someone. Ultimately, Music is the connection of human souls, and much like love, it has the power to affect us all.

Rating: 4.5/5 stars
